Founded in 2010, Hybrid Social Solutions, Inc. (HSSi) is an award-winning social enterprise that provides rural, off- grid communities and underserved remote on-grid communities in the Philippines with sustainable access to high- quality, affordable solar technologies aimed at spurring basic economic development. We have developed strong partnerships with technical innovators for high-quality solar products that are suited to our target market and also with community partners by means of our Solar Access Program (SAP).

Founder and CEO

Jim ayala


Jim Ayala is concurrently the President and CEO of HSSI and the Chairman of Stiftung Solarenergie – Solar Energy Foundation. Jim has worked on economic development issues in emerging markets for 29 years in various roles. He believes that business and investment capital have an essential role to play in solving urgent social problems by working with other stakeholders to commercialize social innovations at the base of the economic pyramid.

Prior to establishing HSSI, Jim was President and CEO of Ayala Land after a long and successful career as a Director at McKinsey and Company. He sits on the boards of FirstGen and Healthway.

Beyond his professional achievements, Jim also has a long history of contributing to social causes. Jim is a National Advisory Council Member of the World Wildlife Fund, Philippines as well as a Trustee of the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Foundation.  He was also formerly a Trustee of Princeton University.

Jim graduated with high honors from Princeton University with a degree in Economics and has an MBA from Harvard Business School, where he also graduated with honors.

Leslie “Les” Gutierrez

Les Gutierrez is a retired private investor based in the United States. Prior to retirement, Les was a Partner and Chief Financial Officer of the Sherman Financial Group, a multi-billion dollar private investment firm engaged in originating credit card and consumer loans and purchasing and working out distressed consumer debt throughout the US and Mexico. 

Les graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Economics and Columbia University with a Masters in Business Administration.

Manuel “Manny” Ayala

Manny Ayala is concurrently Managing Director of Endeavor Philippines, a global non-profit focused on accelerating the growth of High Impact Entrepreneurs, and Founder and Chairman of Hatchd Inc, a technology incubator that invests in and builds internet companies. Prior to Endeavor, Manny was Co-Founder and Managing Director of IRG Ltd., an investment bank focused on Telecoms, Media, and Tech. Manny boasts significant experience in Media through several Asian media networks such as Discovery, TNT & Cartoon Network, and Media Assets Ltd.

Manny graduated from Yale University with a degree in Southeast Asia Studies and Harvard Business School with a Masters in Business Administration.

Alfredo “Fred” Ayala

Fred Ayala is currently a Managing Director and Member of the Management Committee at Ayala Corporation, alongside several other leadership positions within the Ayala Group. Prior to joining Ayala Corporation, Fred had significant experience in private equity and investments as a Partner in Crimson Investment and as Managing Director and Co-Founder of MBO Partners.

Fred graduated from Brown University with a degree in Development Studies and Harvard Business School with a Masters in Business Administration.

Emmanuel Areno

Emmanuel Areno is an Executive Director at Iloilo CODE NGOs Inc. As executive director, he handles capacity building programs for CSO and LGU partners of ICODE. In addition, he functions as a Project Manager for constructive engagement with the Public Sector and Social Accountability in Governance. 

Emmanuel graduated with a degree in Social Science from West Visayas State College and a Masters in Management, Rural Development Management from the University of the Philippines, Visayas Campus.
